Reo Bars
2x N12 REO Bars as Standard
All of our concrete sleepers use two N12 Reo Bars (short for reinforcing bar) to enhance their strength, durability and resistance to cracking. These bars, with a 12 millimeter diameter, provide increased tensile strength to the sleepers, improving its ability to withstand bending and tension forces.
By preventing cracking and increasing overall durability, the inclusion of N12 Reo bars ensures that the concrete sleepers can effectively support heavy loads and withstand environmental factors over time.
Additionally, the use of N12 reinforcement bars aligns with industry standards and regulations for concrete sleeper construction, ensuring ACRS Compliance and quality.
Some concrete sleeper manufacturers will claim greater concrete strength such as 50 MPa or 60 MPa, however, they will use N10 Reo Bars instead which doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a stronger product.
For example, if you wanted to have the equivalent strength as our 40 MPa concrete with 2x N12 Reo Bars, you'd have to use 60 MPa strength concrete and 2x N10 Reo bars.
3N12 REO Bars on 3m Length Sleepers or as extra option
All of our 3 meter length concrete sleepers come with 3x N12 Reo Bars as standard because they require the extra strength needed to support their strength and durability.
However, we can accomodate 3x N12 sleepers on any of our concrete sleepers as often times engineers will request the additional reinforcement based on the retaining wall project.
If you require concrete sleepers with 3x N12 Reo Bars, then we can happily accomodate that your request. Simply call us or send us a message and let out team know about your request.
Heavy-duty Mesh or Ligatures Reinforcement
There are many times when engineers want the concrete sleeper to last 100 years or more, such as commercial and civil projects, and in that case engineers will request even more additional reinforcement such as adding a Mesh on top of the 2x N12 reo bars, like an SL81, or even better and more robust option is to have 3x N12 with other N12 ligatures welded.
At Sunset Sleepers, we’ve done many projects like this which are now used on the side of roads, on railway crossing removals and new railway stations. These heavily reinforced concrete sleepers are usually built in the 150mm widths or the 120mm widths.
If you require concrete sleepers with extra reinforcement such as Mesh or 3x N12 with ligatures, then we can happily accomodate that request for you. Simply call us or send us a message and let out team know about your request.
GFRP Corrosion Resistant Reinforcement
GFRP (Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer) is becoming more frequently used nowadays for particular application use case scenarios such as retaining wall projects closer to coastlines.
At Sunset Sleepers, we have adapted our engineering to cater for GFRP so that all of our concrete sleepers can be manufactured with the standard N12 Reo Bars or the equivalent GFRP replacement.
GFRP creates lower carbon emission and will never rust, hence why it’s predominately used in near coastline retaining wall applications.
GFRP isn’t steel, so the other benefit is that it doesn’t create any magnetic field which is critical if you’re building a reinforced retaining wall near power plant stations.
Plus concrete sleepers with GFRP are much easier to cut if you need to for your retaining wall project.
You will see some of our GFRP concrete sleepers on government projects such as the Koo Wee Cup bypass that connects to Pakenham with more than 1,000 of our concrete sleepers installed beside the new roads.
We’ve also worked with local councils from the Mornington Peninsula who have specially requested GFRP concrete sleepers to be installed along the coastal pathways to replace the aging timber sleepers which are rotting away.
If you require concrete sleepers that have a high strength-to-weight ratio and are corrosion resistance, then we can happily accomodate your request with GFRP concrete sleepers. Simply call us or send us a message and let out team know about your request.
